The Penguins wore this patch to honour their coach "Badger Bob" Johnson who died on November 26th, 1991. Johnson was headcoach of the Wisconsin Badgers from 1966 to 1981 and won the NCAA championships three times - and it was at Wisconsin where Bob Johnson earned his nickname, "Badger Bob".
He coached the US Olympic hockey team several years from 1973 to 1987 before he became headcoach in the NHL (Calgary Flames) in 1982.
Johnson was named headcoach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1990 and won the Stanley Cup with the team in 1991.
